Abstract This article addresses the contribution of community housing to the housing satisfaction and the socio-spatial integration of people. The authors first present some general considerations about housing cooperatives and non-profit housing organizations as an alternative to the market and the public housing. Then they report on the results of a research project concerning tenants without a steady job, especially young people and women heading single-parent families, living in coop and non profit housing of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, a district of Montreal. This research reveals high levels of residential satisfaction and the tenants' social integration at different degrees into their neighbourhood and their district but without establishing a direct linkage between community housing and the sense of belonging to the district.
